What Is Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a versatile medical modality that entails the insertions of very fine filiform needles into prescribed locations on your body to relax your nervous system and musculature.  By relaxing both the mind and the body, acupuncture helps to release excessive muscle tension, relieve pain, balance mood, expedite healing, increase vitality, and improve overall health and well-being.  It’s the most effective treatment in addressing pains and problems associated with stress and excessive muscle use – one of the most common health issues.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture cuts the psychosomatic vicious circle between the nervous system and the musculature.  By relaxing the nervous system, acupuncture lowers the tension of your musculature.  By relaxing the musculature, acupuncture reduces the amount of signals pestering the nervous system so it helps to restore mental balance.  My job as an acupuncturist is to systematically find out where you are carrying the most tension, find the best way to release your pain/tension, and make an immediate discernible difference for you.

Who uses acupuncture?

A NIH research indicated that 14 million North Americans have used acupuncture in their lifetime and roughly 3 million Americans have used acupuncture multiple times within a 12 month period.  The most common use of acupuncture is for pain relief.  That number is increasing steadily over the years, especially in the wake of the opioid epidemic.

Acupuncture has also been widely adopted by professional athletes, dancers, and performance artists to expedite recoveries from injuries so they can train harder and perform at a higher level.
